Ananda - bliss. Ahhh...
that’s it, as I lounge in front of my tent on a rocky
outcropping mere metres from the waves as they break against the
shore. Two smaller, inter-island ferries are passing by, among
sailboats, assorted other pleasure craft, and various small
fishing vessels. It’s a busy morning in the water surrounding
B.C.’s southern Gulf Islands. Sitting on my perch in this corner
of paradise called Salt Spring Island, I spot a larger ferry,
the Queen of Vancouver, making one of its many runs between
Vancouver Island and the mainland. The sun is blazing, but the
cool breeze off the water provides soothing relief. Could it be
any more perfect than this?
Dill Pickles
Welcome to the annual edition of “What I Did on My Summer
Vacation”. So, I’m being lazy - chill-axin’. Blair, on the other
hand, is slaving away (gotta love it!) cooking lunch after our
morning hike through Ruckle Provincial Park. Breakfast was early
this morning. I was the veritable early bird - no worms, though
- yuck! But I did watch the sun rise over Pender Island, while
sipping my morning coffee.
It doesn’t get much better, unless you count sitting in the hot
tub, and contemplating the evening stars at Inner Sanctuary in
Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast. What an incredible start to our
vacation - two days at one of the most unique B & B’s. And two
days of quality time with our daughter, who is responsible for
some of the energy at this peaceful retreat.
Extra Sensory Perception
Unique, extraordinary Inner Sanctuary is the place to go to heal
body, mind & soul, or just relax. With large windows overlooking
the Sechelt Inlet from a spacious property inundated by various
small gardens, Inner Sanctuary is as unconventional as it is
comfortable. The garden tour is fascinating, with the medicine
wheel garden as a focal point. I loved the gorgeous theme rooms,
which have been decorated by local artists. In fact, the
lusciousness of the decor is almost at odds with the casual,
caring ambience created, in true west coast fashion, by the
hosts.
One morning I participated in a yoga class right on the
premises. Although, I ran out of time to treat myself to the
many other spa services available. Next time! It seems there’s a
myriad of ‘sunshiney’ practitioners clamouring to avail
themselves of their skills at Inner Sanctuary. But enough about
that - you can check it out for yourself at
www.innersanctuary.ca.
So what did you do on your summer vacation? Or do you prefer to
take a winter vacation? Probably a smart idea in this part of
the world. Whatever - the important thing, I think, is to take
the time to take a break at least once a year. Time well spent,
I would say. It’s so important to nurture ourselves, but too
often it’s what we’re most likely to neglect.
Outta Sight
I have to admit it’s taken me awhile to figure out. You really
can’t accomplish much without a modicum of inner peace, and that
requires nurturing. Interestingly enough, both of my daughters,
Luna (ecstatic dance master and world peace visionary) and
Andrea (holistic health practitioner, sharing the gifts of reiki
and reflexology) arrived at that conclusion long before me. So,
now their teacher becomes their student. Who says you can’t
teach an old bird new tricks?! They’d probably agree they’re
much more patient with me than I was with them. I could have
used considerably more inner peace while my kids were growing
up! Does anyone else identify with this?
And just because I care, and would love to help each of you who
doesn’t know quite where to start nurturing yourself, I will
recommend an excellent reiki (pronounced rae’-kee) and
reflexology practitioner in Edmonton. In fact, I happen to know
Andrea has an amazing 2-for-1 reiki special on right now. Call
988-1230 for more info, and to book an appointment. You will
reach the Shen Health and Wellness Centre on Calgary Trail -
mention the 2 for 1 special. (If you’re not familiar with these
therapies you can pick up a brochure at Corbins or at the Shen.)
Of course, if you’re not in Edmonton you can still experience
the relaxing, balancing energy of reiki and reflexology, or
acupuncture, massage, etc. somewhere in your community. Just
check your yellow pages. You’ll be glad you did. I mean, all you
have to do is lie there and enjoy. Research has shown these
therapies to have amazing healing benefits. I can attest to
that.
Out of Mind
Speaking of healing benefits, here comes the book
recommendation. I have just begun reading “Getting in the Gap:
Making Conscious Contact with God Through Meditation” by Dr.
Wayne Dyer. I can’t recommend his books enough! This is a lovely
little book with an enclosed CD to guide you. I haven’t tried
the CD yet, but I know Blair has. It sounds like a very simple
way to accomplish what often seems difficult for us. His
explanation in the book is certainly encouraging.
