“How you do anything is how you do
everything”. More wisdom from the mouth of T. Harv Eker.
Sometimes I find it useful to remind myself of this, and today
is one of those days. Maybe you know what I mean, the kind of
day when you wake up feeling like....well, crap. So, I am
reminded that I have a choice. I can be a crap magnet (another
descriptive metaphor complimentary of Harv), wallowing and
complaining, or I can just get on with it, and smile instead.
To See or Not To See
Does this mean I must ignore the signs my body is sending me,
and push myself irregardless of how I’m feeling physically?
Absolutely not. Although, occasionally that might be
appropriate, and we need to have the wherewithal to dig deep and
pull through at those times. Once in awhile we might need to get
in touch with the warrior within us, and do what is hard, in
spite of our mood. It’s very useful to be able to access this
kind of energy when necessary. However, I’m going to suggest in
our society many of us push ourselves unnecessarily. We tend to
ignore our bodies (and our hearts, for that matter), convincing
ourselves we don’t have enough time to spend a bit of it
achieving a healthy balance. Often, when we force ourselves to
keep going, we don’t do it by drawing on the warrior spirit, but
rather by succumbing to the victim. Instead of focusing on what
we want (health/success) we focus on what we don’t want
(pain/problems). So - speaking from personal experience, of
course - I grumble and spread my low vibrational negative
energy, leaving a wake of misery in my path. Under these
circumstances, chances are I’m not accomplishing a whole lot of
what I set out to do anyway. Better I might have stayed in bed;
booked a reiki, reflexology, or acupuncture treatment; or maybe
a nice massage in order to gather positive energy, rather than
dragging myself further into the abyss.
Free Refills
Am I taking my own advice today? Here’s the deal: Since I’m on a
deadline, and I’ve made commitments, as you can see I’m working.
No, I didn’t stay in bed. While I’m an avid promoter of the
other options, having made tremendous use of these amazing
healing therapies, I’ve chosen to postpone a treatment til
tomorrow, in order to fulfill my commitments today. So, I will
be an “enlightened warrior” and do whatever it takes. I’ve put a
lid on the wallowing, a smile on my face, and made a decision to
focus on what I want - to be bigger than my problem. Besides,
really how hard is it to sit, sipping a cup of coffee, while
doing two of my favourite things, writing and creating ads. Aha!
There’s the main key. If you’re doing what you love, the simple
act of doing it can create enough high energy to counteract the
low energy produced by your feelings on “one of those days”.
Fuzzy Pickles
I’ve also discovered that consciously wearing a smile very
shortly encourages an unconscious smile, proving that I can give
any situation the meaning I choose to give it. The simple act of
smiling is an antidote to misery, not only for the smiler, but
conversely for the smilee. You can test that for yourself. The
other day, while walking down the street I encountered a
homeless man pushing a cart. It was a nasty day, one that would
be more comfortably spent out of the elements, but there he was,
going about his ‘job’ of collecting bottles, etc. Likely there
are few places he can go to avoid the weather, anyway. As I
passed I smiled at him, and he returned the favour back to me.
It put a whole new perspective on my hectic day, and I hope he
felt better, too.
Speaking of homelessness, I’ve always felt that “there but for
the grace of God go I”. It’s an issue close to my heart. I
admire the people that pitch in and help at the shelters, soup
kitchens, etc. Apart from a stint at the Youth Emergency Shelter
some time ago, I haven’t given my time for the cause lately.
It’s something to seriously consider, but in the meantime there
are things I can do to help now, and it starts with a smile.
Beyond that, those of us with limited time can make a difference
by making monetary donations.
By choosing to make a donation to an organization instead of a
panhandler, you can do your due diligence to ensure that your
money is going where you want. You will be providing a hand up
rather than a handout.
Pro Choice
While I suggest you make your own choices, because what comes
from your heart nurtures your heart, I can make a couple of
recommendations, based on my favourites, to my interested
Edmonton readers. Insomuch as one of my visions is to help
motivate youth, the leaders of the future, I have a penchant for
supporting the work of organizations which assist disadvantaged
kids to find their power, ie. the Youth Emergency Shelter
Society. As well, I’ve done a bit of investigation into the Old
Strathcona Adult Outreach Program, which is under the auspices
of the Old Strathcona Area Community Council, and appreciate
their efforts to assist and encourage street people. Their
initiative, the Old Strathcona Help the Homeless Fund, is one I
consider to be worthwhile, and I was conveniently able to make a
donation at Scotia Bank on Whyte Ave. & 105 St. As registered
non-profit societies both of these groups issue tax receipts.
There’s no reason why giving shouldn’t be mutually beneficial.
In fact, it always is. It’s the way the universe works - you get
what you give. Always - all ways.
For everyone out there, wherever you may be, there is always
someone in need of your support. You can be the shining light
that guides someone out of the darkness. In return your inner
light will glow brightly and nurture you. You’ll have less of
“those kind of days”, you’ll have to be a warrior less often,
and you’ll find yourself gliding much more effortlessly through
life.
