“You’ve got to change the way
you think.” You might know I’m famous for suggesting this. Why?
Because if I’m stuck in a problem situation, it’s always due to
my own non-supportive thoughts. Obviously, I don’t want to
change supportive thoughts, since they’re never, ever a problem.
However, it’s been my experience that I get really mired in the
negative stuff. Maybe this is your experience, too. Imagine if
you could change every negative, non-supportive thought you ever
have, and turn it into something positive. How would that impact
your life?
Burnt Toast
Easier said than done? It depends - on you. Taking reference
from quantum physics, low vibrational energy - the stuff of
which problems are made - is not conducive to productivity. It
really is like being stuck in the mud. It will take some extra
effort to pull yourself out. You will actually have to make a
conscious decision to do that.
It might not always be easy, but it’s possible. And ultimately
it’s easier than the alternative. You have a choice. You can
choose to stay in your negative mind-set - be grumpy, miserable,
unhappy, and unproductive. Conversely, you can choose to flip
things around - like flipping an egg. The trick is to do it
‘over easy’ every time. It takes practice. The reward is, once
you get good at it, you’ll seldom have to think about it
anymore. You’ll just have your eggs ‘sunny side up’ most of the
time!
Scrambled Eggs
Why do I write this stuff? A world with no problems -
impossible! Aha! It would seem that way, but I don’t believe
it’s true. A world with challenges - yes, but whether we choose
to make the challenges into problems is our choice. I’m writing
about it because, like most everyone else, I too often let those
challenges turn into problems. Writing is my way of reminding
myself to take the step to return to the path of enlightenment.
Also, if I can encourage someone else along the way, then I’ve
made a contribution to help others while I’m at it.
You could say that’s one way of turning a challenge into
something positive. If you believe that everything happens for a
reason, and that the reason is for your benefit, then you’ll
view every difficult situation from a positive perspective. Once
again, easier than it sounds? Possibly, but it’s also been my
experience that practice makes - well, it easier!
Masquerade
You can start with this simple exercise. From now on, when you
encounter a difficult situation, put a smile on your face - go
ahead, try it. If you can manage this one basic task, you’ll
notice your energy shifting, and your attitude miraculously
changing. You are on the way to changing the way you think! It’s
difficult to yell, swear, grumble, stamp your foot, or throw
something in frustration when you’re smiling. Try it. If you do
manage any of those things with a smile on your face, you’ll
probably burst out laughing at the lunacy of the situation. In
any case, problem defused. You can move on from there.
The smile exercise is a good start to realizing that everything
can be viewed from more than one perspective. To make a
permanent attitude and behavior change you’ll have to put some
real effort into it. I don’t mean ‘effort’ in the difficult
sense. I mean setting an intention and focusing attention on it
in a very real, positive way, allowing it to flow without
forcing the issue.
Law and Leisure
Strangely, according to the law of least effort, wanting to do
something is enough to help you accomplish it. Consider the
times you’ve been really excited about participating in a
favourite activity - a ski trip, a European vacation, a family
camping trip, a hike in the mountains, or maybe a leisurely
cruise - whatever thrills you the most. There are usually
numerous tedious tasks involved in the preparation of your
activity of choice. You might usually find these undesirable,
but in the anticipation of a joyful experience you handle them
with ease. The motivation makes the difference. There it is, the
‘m’ word. The trick then is to discover a way to motivate
yourself to change the way you think. What will it take to
convince yourself to leave non-supportive thoughts behind?
In order to effectively cause permanent change, this will
involve some preparation. The preparation I’m suggesting will
recondition your mind by giving it a break. Your thoughts cause
your emotions, which influence your actions. When you practice
the smile exercise you’ll also notice that you can reverse the
process, and you might realize you’ve actually accomplished this
by NOT THINKING. You’ve simply followed an instruction.
Inanity
Can it be then, that our problems are caused by thinking?
Consider this (only briefly - don’t think too much): Nothing has
meaning until we give it meaning. It’s always best to accept
things exactly as they are in the moment, utilizing the
situation as it is, rather than dredging up old fears to make
things seem worse than they actually are.
So, how do you get to a place that’s out of your mind (really,
that is where you want to be!) and in your heart instead? Take
time to nurture yourself spiritually. This essentially means
taking time for yourself. This might include anything from
meditation and prayer to exercise, hobbies, and vacations. Don’t
forget family time. I suggest you choose a minimum of two
practices to incorporate into your daily routine. Yes, you will
have to make time - how much, is your choice. Studies have shown
that it pays off with increased productivity and happiness, as
well as better health. You can’t say that’s a waste of time.
Once again, you only have to change the way you think!
