How does this process work?
I’m referring to the process of writing a column or article -
one like this in which the topic hasn’t been pre-determined.
Where do I get my ideas? Frankly, it beats me. I’m quite
serious. For the most part it writes itself - sometimes more
than others, but somewhere in there is always the magic that
unfolds totally unbidden by me. It’s occurred to me this is
especially true of the pieces that elicit the most positive
feedback.

Sure, I have in mind a purpose for these compositions; my
intention is to bond with the readers, while informing and
inspiring them. However, I don’t have a specific formula for
doing this. My process is more artistically creative than
scientific. As you’ve no doubt noticed, the content of each of
these chapters varies drastically, from the mundane, to
business, to spiritual, to esoteric - there’s little if any
continuity. If you read a chapter one month, you’d best not
expect that train of thought to be continued in the next. You’ll
find the train has derailed immediately at the end of every
chapter.
This appears to be attention deficit at its peak. Actually, it’s
my mind set free to go with the flow. The flow of what? The
answer that comes to mind is the flow of universal energy, that
intelligence which is all-knowing being imparted through me as
the observer. The weird thing is it has a life of its own. Once
it begins to flow, it requires very little of my energy to
encourage it. In fact, I find the result is superior if I just
let go and let it flow through my silent mind with no
interference. This is what’s known as creative space. There is
no judgment or criticism here - there is always time for editing
once the message has presented itself in its entirety, but until
then it’s totally magical and completely free.

I’m certain many of you can identify. Consider your own creative
endeavors. Sure, you might have some training; you might have
honed some skills. This is necessarily useful for getting your
message across - whether it’s a written piece, a painting,
music, or anything else, but the space between the training and
your connection to the Source of the universe is where the
talent lies. The result is the divine orchestrated through you.
How magical is that? I would call it truly miraculous.
I think this is when you know you've discovered your passion -
when all time dissolves, and there is only you and God, and you
feel as one. This is when you’ve uncovered the key to your
sole....no, I would say your soul purpose. This is your reason
for being. The illusions which have been nurtured to protect
your ego have, at least for a time, evaporated just as the sun
evaporates the mist, and you have a glimpse of your true self.
You’ve taken a step closer to ecstasy, which is your birthright.
Alladin’s Camp
You see, when I sat down to begin this piece I had no idea where
it was going to go. I certainly didn’t know where it would end
up. There are times when I realize the deadline for publication
is looming, so I attempt to prepare a topic, but seldom does
that materialize the way I’ve envisioned. Other times, I feel
suddenly compelled, at the strangest times or in the strangest
places, to drop my current agenda and start writing. Either way,
I’m eventually reduced to observer, my plans go out the window,
and some other energy takes over the writing. At this point, I’m
clueless as to what will finally appear on page 2. That the
result will be interesting, informative, or inspiring is a
matter of pure trust. The only given is that once the ink is on
the page it’s a reality. Whether the reality is good, bad, or
indifferent is up to you, because as the reader, you are
ultimately the owner of what you’ve read. The decision is yours.
Deep’s Baseline
If I am to recommend a book this month, based on my perception
of good, I’d have to pick “ Power, Freedom, and Grace: Living
from the Source of Lasting Happiness” by Deepak Chopra. He’s one
of my favourite authors, although he denies being the author of
anything. He has a way of taking the esoteric, and making it
clear. It’s the scientist in him that demands clarification. If
you’re interested in the mysteries of life as we don’t know it,
I highly recommend you read his books.
Amazing Space
Getting back to business, how does any of this apply? Let’s
start with Trust and it’s good friend, Faith. In fact, let’s end
there. Because that’s what it all boils down to. All you can do
is take an intention, put your attention on it, and allow the
results to show. Remember, what you focus on expands - it’s the
law of nature. The important thing is to focus on what you want,
rather than what you don’t want. In other words, be careful what
you ask for.
It’s a proven fact that if you put your full attention on
something, it will manifest, inasmuch as it’s aligned with the
purpose of the Universe. Dr. Chopra calls this the “law of least
effort”. The critical thing to avoid is becoming attached to the
results. If the final result doesn’t look exactly as you
envisioned, it’s because this is what will ultimately serve you
and others best. The laws of karma have prevailed, and sooner or
later you might understand. Really, what has taken place is a
miracle. It’s the same as what happens when I undertake to write
this column.
