Do you ever feel you’re slipping
backward? That you’ve made so much progress and now your old
patterns seem to be making a comeback? Guess what. That’s not
the case. You’re not actually going backward; it may feel that
way, but you’ve only come to a bump in the road of life.
Under Construction
The thing is, the paradigm has already shifted; you can’t become
unaware of what you’re already aware of. You may be resisting
for whatever reason, but you can’t actually go backward without
deleting the experiences that brought you forward in the first
place. It would take some serious form of amnesia to do that.
How long you spend contemplating the bump is totally up to you.
When you’re ready you’ll conquer the bump - under, over, around,
or through - you’ll get to the other side of it. And every time
you do this, the easier it gets. Pretty soon, the big bumps will
be mere blips on the monitor of your life’s journey.
Whatever am I talking about? I’m talking about being. Let me put
it on a more mundane level, I guess you’d say I’m referring to a
way of being - for instance, the way each of us acts, and for
that matter, reacts - sometimes especially that. Every action is
generated by a thought arising from a feeling. This is where
choice comes in. It’s the thinking about it that decides how one
chooses to act. After awhile, of course, we begin making those
choices somewhat unconsciously, and we find ourselves acting in
a very predictable manner. It would seem, then, that our egos
are easily trained, and yet that’s not been my experience.

Let’s investigate the ego. The purpose of ego is
self-preservation, so when our egos are involved it’s for the
purpose of protecting ourselves. How that comes to light depends
on what the ego thinks the self needs to be protected from.
Interestingly, it seems most of our actions stem from childhood
experiences - both positive and negative. After all, this is
when a phenomenal amount of learning occurs. As a child, if a
particular situation made us feel good, we learned to react in a
positive way. Conversely, if something made us feel bad, our
reaction was negative. So, unless there’s been a powerful
intervention to change the emotion associated with a particular
event, our reactions and choices will be similar for the rest of
our lives. This is what’s known as conditioning.

Powerful interventions can occur in both negative and positive
manners. Sometimes we might experience something ‘bad’ in a
situation where we previously had only ‘good’ feelings, and vice
versa. Notice I’ve used quotation marks around ‘bad’ and ‘good’
because these are subjective feelings. They describe our
personal take on a situation. Particularly when something ‘bad’
hurts us, our ego, which is our survival instinct, takes over in
an attempt to prevent that from ever happening again, and so the
pattern is changed. Negative events are very powerful modifiers,
but they make us fearful, which causes us to spread more
negative energy.
I think we all agree we’d rather spread positive energy -
happiness, joy, and ecstasy. It’s more productive, it makes the
people around us feel better, and of course, we feel ‘good’
instead of ‘bad’. But how can we make this happen when we find
ourselves in a negative space? We might feel sad, angry,
frustrated, or just plain scared, for whatever reason. How do we
shift the energy from negative to positive?

In the same way a trauma can change the way we react to certain
events, so a powerful positive experience can also shock us into
changing old patterns. It blows our hearts wide open, making us
more accepting of whatever lies in our path. When our hearts are
open we’re more capable of dealing with challenges, and we just
naturally influence others positively.
What sort of powerful positive experience has the ability to
effect serious positive change in our attitude? Well, I’ve
participated in several life-changing seminars and workshops.
What made them life changing is that they challenged my fears
and took me way beyond my comfort zone. Because they were
designed for me to discover success when I took the plunge, I
felt great joy when my fears were conquered. This gave me a
whole new association with challenging my fears in general. I
learned that I was capable of being successful when I acted in
spite of fear. This is an amazingly empowering feeling. There is
nothing more positive than feeling the power within. I highly
recommend challenging yourself on a regular basis. The joy you
feel when you succeed is unmatched.
